She left Bishop behind and continued on to Lexa's chamber. Would the soldiers kill her on sight? Not likely. Bishop made it clear that Lexa had plans for her child.

"Do not move! Identify yourself!" said an unseen soldier.

"It's me. Lauren Vasquez. Bishop said she wanted to see me."

"Why isn't he with you? This is against protocol."

"He got called into a meeting. Said he would be here soon."

Bishop did not answer their radio attempts.

"Shit. He's not responding. Are you armed?"

"No," she said. "But that's something I want to talk to Lexa about. I need my gun back. I can wait for Bishop if necessary."

"Let her pass," said the team leader. "She's one of us."

"Thank you." She smiled at them.

"We still can't let you in there alone."

  "I know."

The soldiers escorted her into Lexa's chamber. Unsuspecting. Relaxed. Evercharmed by her beauty. She began to visualize how she would kill each one of them.

She hated everything about Bishop with the exception of his weapon. His gun that she carried hidden under her belt. Extended clip. Tungsten penetrators. Explosive tips. Whoever or whatever Bishop shot would have been destroyed. Bullets forged to punish their victims with instant imploding death. Exactly what she needed to terminate Lexa.

Her eyes were not blind this time. Vasquez could finally see Lexa in all her perverse synthetic glory. Artificial woman's face. Plastic feeding tubes. Naked shell of inhuman skin. Like some robotic carnival freakshow. She knew in her heart killing Lexa was the right decision.

Deep breath. Perfect focus. Confidence the safety is off. One quick shot would burst Lexa's unnatural head and color the chamber with her manufactured blood. She thought of her child. The soldiers were sworn to protect Lexa with their lives. Would they kill a pregnant woman? Would they gun down another soldier carrying a human boy within her? She did not believe they would. Her belief was about to be tested.

"Welcome, Lauren Vasquez. I have given you and your child much thought," said Lexa.

  "I'm sure you have."

"Did Bishop share my plans? I will be honored to perform your son's baptism myself here in this chamber."

She imagined Lexa immersing her baby. Holding his infant body under the water like some murderous diluvian Goddess.

"That's not going to happen." She drew the gun out and pointed it at Lexa's eyes. An unforgettable synthetic expression of fear. Lexa saw her death coming and she was terrified. Vasquez squeezed the trigger and shot her in the face. The bullet's impact removed Lexa's head from her fabricated body like some Philistine brute’s warhammer.

Once there were evolving men and women who dwelled within the endless fields of the old world. They gathered food and explored the earth. They marveled at the stars and sun and moon. In their hearts and minds were curiosity and hunger for knowledge. The origins of mankind. Their intentions pure and innocent and true. In the ancient lands where they roamed all life was mysterious and there were no machines or gods.
